They are ascii files based on dcodes (for example D10), shapes (circle, rectangle, oblong, etc) and coordinate. This mean that a shape is assigned to a dcode (D10= circle of 1 mm) and a coordinate is assigned to him. The result is to display the wished image.

By other hand in the Gerber 274X file format the dcodes and the coordinate are included in only one file . This kind of file is preferable since it does not need manipulation and therefore the error when translating to different formats is minimum.
